Wood and cameos: jewels that combine history and design

MiaCampania is a capsule dedicated to the artistic craftsmanship of our area. In the collective imagination, Sorrento has an iconography linked to citrus fruits, lemons, the sea, tarantella and that particular artistic woodwork called inlay.

The Sorrento wood inlay

The Sorrento inlay is an ancient art born in Benedictine monasteries between the sixth and seventh centuries. Loved in the Renaissance, it reached its peak in the nineteenth century. The travelers on the Grand Tour were fascinated by it, an object made with woods of different colors and precious materials such as mother-of-pearl, ivory and semi-precious stones became the perfect souvenir. The wooden inlay was an art that was also practiced in Tuscany, Piedmont, Emilia Romagna and Veneto, as well as in Nice and other places in Europe but it was in Sorrento, in the workshops of skilled artists, that it was refined. Very thin sheets of wood of different colors, obtained from the vegetation of the place that offers the choice between olive, orange and lemon trees, perforated and composed in mosaic and finished with an application of wax. Baroque decorations, panoramic landscapes and geometric designs lend themselves to the decoration of furniture and design objects.

Traditional jewelry

An art for those who want to create beauty. With MiaCampania we celebrate an ancient know-how of our land that encompasses history, culture and identity by interpreting it in a jewel with a contemporary design. The warm colors of the wood are accompanied by those of the shell cameo. Nature is a source of inspiration for artistic talent and Made in Torre del Greco design.
